Birth of a Flower

Description in Javed’s own words: Birth taking its course within the tintet green of life as it starts with in the mingle of togetherness nature and man becomes one.

Daily Star, the leading English Daily in Bangladesh written about him-

“JAVED Jalil went to USA in 1987 to study philosophy and literature. There he got attracted to the art galleries and read books on art, especially on Goya and Picasso. “I became attracted to their psychological aspects and began to draw. I was involved in an accident. To alleviate my physical pain and loneliness I went deep into fine arts. With the help of paintings I could concentrate more and find greater peace within myself,” says Javed. At first he went to Bethany College in Kansas. Later he simultaneously worked in Los Angeles and went to the Trade Technical college.

Subsequently, he studied at the Los Angeles School of Art for a while and then went back to working on fine arts. He got to know some artists who helped him in different ways. These included Granados and Haskins who inspired him greatly. “More than that, my inspiration came from nature; drawing and painting gave me solace,” he says.

Later on he did workshops with David Hockney and delved deep into the works of Goya, Rembrandt and Picasso. “I liked Goya’s intensity and Picasso’s ability to penetrate the deeper source of life,” he says. He experienced joy and satisfaction in creating a world of his own in art. Asked if any Bangladeshi artists influenced him, he says that SM Sultan’s lifestyle attracted him as well as Quamral Hassan’s diversity of subjects and somewhat Matisse-like style. Among the senior fellow artists that he gets along well with, are Abdus Shakoor and Hamiduzzaman Khan.

“I find the human figure very interesting,” elaborates Javed, when asked about his subjects. “I can identify myself in their twists and turns. I often combine nature and animals with human figures. As for the media I like to go in for oils as I enjoy how it plays on the canvas and the luminous effect it has. I also love its fragrance. In my recent works I’ve used Chinese brush with ink with the surface ground building up in oil. So the work is a combination of painting and graphics. I like the strong sense of line for which I use the brushes, using a chemical to see that the oil doesn’t merge with the lines. I take images around me and try to create a lyrical composition. My imagination also works on the figures to form the composition structures in which I aim at symphonies.”

He sometimes does straightforward drawings with different types of pens. Then he graduates on to the canvas and after some hours he proceeds on to a water-colour, as the mood takes him. After a break he goes on to painting again. While working, he listens to classical music such as Bach, Chopin and Vivaldi. He says that the music helps him focus. As the sound affects his nerves, he moves his fingers. Incidentally Gallery Shilpangan is like his second home where he has addas with his fellow artists.

Javed has exhibited his works in Los Angeles and Dhaka.”

Well! We were great warriors and competitors in school days for almost 10 years! And, frankly speaking, it was really nice that we met after 15 years and I actually never felt I was meeting him after so long years, months..days..it was like “I have seen you other day”. But in reality, it was not and what I learn from him this time is “How to practice Patience”..let time speaks..!

I met Krishnanjan’s father, I could not even remember his face before meeting him, because, hardly I seen him in school days, but I can still remember Krishnanjan’s Grandma. I still remember, Krishnanjan used to sit with her and have had his tiffin or lunch whatever. “Kaku” was awesome! I must say, Krishnanjan is lucky, he had got a father like him. There are a very few parents in this world like Krishnanjan’s parents, who can actually accept their children not as a “kid” but as a “matured friend”. Friendship is such a relation, which exists even after we die physically.

As I was remembering him, after returning home, powered on laptop and wrote these words..bla bla..bla..Like to upload a few pictures from memories and these snaps were taken by Krishnanjan in his new Canon Digital Cam.

Grey Copenhagen won the bid to create an advert for the global launch of Nokia’s new phone, the 3220 and they in turn hired Ghost to make the film in 3D. The Nokia 3220 has a host of different accessories you can clip on to personalize it, most notably a backplate that enables the user to write light-messages in the air.The advert illustrates the countless ways the phone can be customized and hundreds of phones are shown on the screen, while they assemble, detach and move in complicated patterns.The first step was an animatic made with low-rez geometry, which was repeatably tweaked and adjusted. This happened in close collaboration with the agency and the director, until the sequence was finalized. At the same time, CAD-models from Nokia were adapted and optimised for use in Maya.The deadline on the project was very tight considering the level of ambition: 12 different versions of the film had to be ready in 4 weeks.In order to handle the vast number of polygons and minimize the number of re-renders and render-layers, we decided to render out the whole film in Renderman.The film was delivered in 2K and broadcast globally.

This is an initiative by Ian Johnson. I’m quite amazed to see the way Ian tells a story through his photographs. Let’s not talk about Technology, I liked way Ian said, “My style is a cinematic photo-journalistic story telling style but with an eye-catching look. Pretend your wedding is a movie”. I had a question here, why Ian depicts himself as a Photo Journalist, yes, he might be right in the way, photo-journalists used to create stories out of a news, but I wanted to say, Ian could mark himself as A Visual Story Teller, and in a cinematic way, no news, no stories out of it. Marriage itself is a story, Ian is having script in his hand, he knows the story is taking place in a melodramatic way and he needs to capture it within frames with his own style, blended with technology and he produces a Cinema called “The Saga of Wedding” out of it.

My Idea of an Open Workshop

The Open Workshop could be a production, design and development and residency centre for creative artists all across media, painting, photography art, animation, film, graphic design and music. It is a haven where both new and acknowledged and unknown talents, artists and professionals can reside for a time to work on their personal projects, on their own and together. The Open Workshop will provide necessary environment, the facilities and some of the financial means necessary to develop and produce “creative shits” end of the day.

The Open Workshop can support and host the production of short films and other short-term-low-budget projects as well as the development phases on longer-term and more costly endeavours. After development, such film and show concepts can be presented to Indian and European production companies for further development and co-production. In the case of short films, this open workshop facilities can manage worldwide festival distribution.

The Open Workshop is a centre for those persons who loves to dream and try to shape their dreams into reality, but as such it could also be central to commercial project development. It will be the place where new cultural products can arise, where international cross-media research and development projects can be carried out in collaboration with others. This place could be such a place, where the most important of all cultural products, concepts and stories, will be born.

I would like to discuss these issues with anybody interested to venture into this. We want money and space to start, otherwise, this is such a dream, which cannot be turned into reality and I am sure, this is a great venture to do in terms of unite and collaborative practice of applied art in our country.
